Vintage, 9ct Gold and Turquoise Puffy Heart Mizpah Necklace

This is a really sweet and unusual vintage Mizpah necklace, with a romantic and loving sentiment.

The pendant features a bible/book shaped pendant, across which are the words: 'The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent from one another', engraved on the pages. The word, 'Mizpah' , is engraved in raised letters across the centre of the book. Hanging down from the book is a dangling puffy heart with a turquoise gem centre. On the pendant's reverse are the words, 'Love'.

The pendant is hallmarked for 9ct Gold, and I would date it to the 1940s/1950s.

Mizpah jewellery was popular during the Victorian era from the mid- to late-1800s and tended to serve as sweetheart jewellery, given to a loved one during a period of long separation such as military service or travel.

The word Mizpah comes from the Old Testament (Genesis 31:49, "And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent from one another")
