Unusual, Victorian 9ct Gold (F&B) and Enamel, Mizpah Locket
This is a really beautiful, Victorian 9ct gold & Dark Blue enamel mizpah locket.
Typical of its time ornate engravings adorn the back & front of this locket and at the bottom is written, 'Mizpah'. The word Mizpah comes from the Old Testament (Genesis 31:49, "And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent from one another")
Central to the beautiful floral engraving of leaves and forget me knots on its front, is a large 8 sided star crafted from 13 lustrious seed pearls. In Victorian times, stars were synonymous with direction and guidance, and would often be gifted to a loved one.
The locket opens with a place to put photos on each side. It clicks shut tightly & comes complete with its large bail.
Mizpah jewellery was popular during the Victorian era from the mid- to late-1800s and tended to serve as sweetheart jewellery, given to a loved one during a period of long separation such as military service or travel.
This locket measures 3.6cm x 3cm excluding the bail and is all made of 9ct yellow gold fronted & back with an inner metal, so the locket is nice & strong.
It remains in good condition with a little wear as would be expected with its age.
