Victorian, 9ct Gold Ouroboros Crystal Locket Brooch

The ancient ouroboros depicts a snake devouring its own tail.  This image, which origiated in ancient Egypt (but went on to be recognised in Greece (ourboros means 'tail devourer in greek), Italy, India, China and Scandanavia) represents the eternal, natural cycle of life, death and rebirth.
 
This is fabulous and rare Victorian locket/brooch has a snake wrapped around its kidney shaped outside; the ouroboros symbol. The snake's skin is beautifully engraved and the locket cover is crafted from crystal.
 
This rare antique piece is not hallmarked, but has been tested for 9ct Gold.   It measures 3.5cm x 1.4cm and weighs 4.11g
