Rare, Vintage, 9ct Gold and Garnet Mizpah Pendant

This very sweet and unusual vintage Mizpah pendant, carries with it a huge amount of loving sentiment. 

This circular pendant  features a large, old cut garnet in a starburst setting, above the rasied letters, 'Mizpah'. Beautiful engraving borders the pendant in the form of foilage, or possibly waves.  Underneath 'Mizpah' is what looks like an engraved forget me not flower.

The word Mizpah comes from the Old Testament (Genesis 31:49, "And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent from one another") 

Mizpah jewellery was popular during the Victorian era from the mid- to late-1800s and tended to serve as sweetheart jewellery, given to a loved one during a period of long separation such as military service or travel.

The pendant is hallmarked for 9ct Gold on its reverse, and I would date it to the 1940s/1950s.  It measures 1.9cm diameter and it weighs 1.94g.  It comes with the 9ct gold chain pictured, which measures 16.5 inches.
