Rare, Georgian, Brass 'Hand in Heart' Brooch, with Coral Heart
Rare, Georgian, Brass 'Hand in Heart' Brooch, with Coral Heart
This is a rare Georgian brooch, depicting the 'heart in hand' symbol, thought to represent friendship and charity.
The 'Heart in Hand' became one of the symbols used by the Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) in the 1800s - and served to remind members to keep their hearts/giving spirit open to their fellow brothers in need.
The pin is brass and not gold, and the little heart is made of coral. The hand itself is beautifully decorated in what i think must be a lace glove, and is bordered by ornate engraving to its metal surround. If you look through a loupe, there also appears to be decorated hair as background, meaning that this brooch was probably worn in remembrance of a loved one, possibly another member of the IOOF.
This is a very rare antique piece, beautifully preserved and ready to be worn again.
