RESERVED FINAL PAYMENT KATHY Incredible, Early Victorian, 18ct Gold and Enamel Antique Vinaigrette / Pendant

This stunning and unusual Victorian Vinaigrette is an incredible piece of history.

On its face, it features a wonderful hand painted scene; a magnificent boat (possibly trade) entering an alpine / Romanesque village with mountains in the background. The reverse shows a similar scene, a sailing boat on the river, with what look like continental houses on its banks. All in all, it is a peaceful and immensly beautiful scene.

This historial pendant measures 4.7cm x 3.5cm and it weighs 15.56g. Although it is not hallmarked, it has been tested for 18ct Gold on its outside and inside compartment.

This vinaigrette opens and closes beautifully. Its middle part, which was used to house the perfume soaked sponge also opens and clicks shut. This compartment is beautifully decorated with a vase of forget me not flowers as well as intricate gold work detailing over its entirety.

Before effective personal hygiene habits became common place, ladies carried personal vinaigrettes to mask the smells and odors wafting through their environment; open sewers, animal dung, pollution etc. They were also thought to protect against disease. A little bit of sponge was soaked in perfume or fragrant oils and placed beneath the perforated cover - only to be brought out when needed!
