Edwardian, 9ct Solid Gold Heart Locket with Forget-me-nots. Hallmarked for 9ct Gold, Birmingham, 1910

This really pretty Edwardian heart-shaped locket is crafted from solid 9ct gold.  Adorned with ornate engravings of forget me not flowers,  romantic sentiment covers this wonderful keepsake.  Detailed engravings continue on the back of the locket and the inside is empty, aside from its original frames.

The heart measures 1.8cm x 2.5cm and weighs 2.54g.  It is fully hallmarked on its reverse for 9ct Gold, Birmingham and the date 1910.  It also displays its makers mark, W. N. C

In the Victorian age, forget-me-nots signified remembrance and true love.   They appear on many sweetheart jewellery items, especially lockets. It was thought that the lady who wore the forget-me-not would never be forgotten by their lovers.
 
According to folklore, forget-me-nots were first mentioned in a story of a man and his sweetheart who were walking beside the River Danube.  They saw the beautiful blue flowers on an islet in the middle of the river.  The man leapt into the water to get the blue flowers for his love.  Although the current was strong, the man crossed the river safely and got the flowers.  However, on his trip back he was swept away in the rapids.  Before he completely disappeared, he threw the bouquet of forget-me-nots to his love and shouted,  'Forget-me-not!'  She wore these flowers on her hair until the day she died and never forgot about him.
