This beautiful locket is a Japanese decorative-metalwork alloy called 'Shakudō' and is composed of copper, brass and a small mixture of silver and gold; around 1-5%.

Shakudō designs reached their height during the Edo period (1600s - 1800s), where master armourers and swordsmiths used it for intricate katana furniture. During the Victorian period, European jewellers transformed them into lockets, bracelets and brooches.  They are very collectable now and often feature country scenes or those on water.

This incredible piece of history features a man in traditional Japanese clothing with Mount Fuji behind him.  On the reverse, a boat on water sails the seas. The locket is empty and clean inside.

The locket is 2.5cm x 3cm and weighs 14.31g.
