This 9ct Gold (Front and back) Victorian aesthetic movement locket is a mesmerising and romantic piece of sweetheart jewellery. Beautifully adorned with two engraved birds, (whose heads and bodies are decorated with paste stones) amongst flowers, this is a locket rich in charm and history.
The locket measures 2.3 x 3.7cm (including the bow, but not the bale) and it weighs 5.10g. It dates to 1880-1890 and remains in wonderful condition. The inside is empty, ready for your own photographs and both its original frames are present. The locket shuts securely.
No hallmarks remain on this pretty locket, but it has been verified as 9ct Gold, Front and back, which means its core is made of a strong metal and the 9ct gold used on its outside only.
Birds frequently appear on antique jewellery of the victorian period. Swallows and doves in particular adorned all kinds of sweetheart jewellery. Swallows are known to mate for life and always return to their nests, so it made sense for them to be on jewellery that lovers would give to each other, either as a mark of forever love, or to keep at ones heart when apart from each other.
This lovely locket would make a romantic gift, or a pretty keepsake to hold the pictures of a loved one close to your heart.
Please note that the chain pictured does not come with the locket.
