It is believed that horse shoes were first used as good luck symbols from the 9th century AD although some earlier examples have been discovered in tombs. They were very popular in Victorian times, and were frequently found on jewellery items and trinkets. Jewellery with interlocking horse shoes such as this ring, was often given as love tokens.
